So the barely living legend, Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy, has emerged from hiding to request that his state lawmakers change the rules on how to fill his Senate seat after he retires or passes away.
Normally this wouldn’t stir me enough to turn over in bed, but when you take a closer look at the details, it becomes a very interesting story indeed.
In 2004, there was a junior Senator from Teddy’s state that was running for President… John Kerry. And “everyone” in the world was 100% certain that we’d have a President Kerry after the polls were manipulated – I mean tabulated. But this result, while good for the Democrats in that they’d gain back the White House, was bad in that they’d most likely have lost a Senate seat. Why you ask?
The governor of Massachusetts at the time was the hated Republican Mitt Romney and state law gave Mitt the responsibility of appointing a successor. And Kennedy couldn’t have that – so he had the law changed to strip the governor of his powers.
After Kerry lost, Mitt didn’t run again and a Dem landed in the governor’s mansion. Teddy, gravely ill, knows his seat will be vacated soon and… he had the law changed so that the people will have a choice in his successor?!?
Crap!! Not… the PEOPLE!!! Why, what if they elected a Republican? The vaunted supermajority would be dead – as would Ted.
Now Teddy wants the law changed back again to strip the people of the ability to appoint a successor because there’s a Dem in the power chair.
Does anyone else smell hypocrisy? Better yet, why doesn’t anyone on the planet write or talk about the bigger issue here?
You see, Teddy doesn’t care about the people’s rights to elect their representative. He doesn’t care about anything but his own party’s power.
Just like Obama/Pelosi/Reid don’t really give a dead flea off a rat’s patootie about Grandma Gertrude’s healthcare plan… or about Jose Hernandez’s immigration woes… or about Joe Johnson’s tax rate.
They only care about their ability to bend individual rights to support and consolidate their power over American citizens.
They’ve turned into this evil party of selfish, misguided, hateful aristocracy that, at their core, worships government and power. That’s why you see Obama and most Democrats consistently try to ignore the people’s wishes and ignore what’s good for the nation in favor of their own agenda.
Now I’m all for the idea that, to the winner goes the spoils. And occasionally I slip into the mode of “I’m the most important person in the lives of everyone I know and most of the people I’ve never even met,” but Kennedy’s recent actions highlight perfectly the systemic disease of this Party’s arrogance.
I can just hope that the current collection of miscreants running the Democratic Party will start to fade away and be replaced by folks that want what’s best for their countrymen.
